DeLeon Student Plays in Sonoma County Honor Band
Saturday night, January 30th, one of our judo students received an honor that I felt should be mentioned. Teaching judo is not just about teaching martial arts but teaching our kids to be good students academically in school, and to be a better person in the community and other endeavors. Last Saturday at Sonoma State University, the Sonoma County Honor Band performed. Sonoma County Honor band is made up of the best musicians from all of the Sonoma County High Schools. The band is made up of over 80 musicians playing all types of instruments.
Our judo student Alessia Garcia, playing the saxophone, was selected as one of the 80 band members. She was selected as first chair and was also selected to play a solo in one of the scores.
She also received only ONE of 5 scholarships given to the best musicians selected by the Band Directors, to go to a summer camp in July. A great honor and achievement and credit to her skills and hard work.
Also, Hikaru, son of our assistant instructor Carl, was also selected to perform in the Honor Band, playing the trumpet (first chair). He also was selected to perform a few solos. Hikaru was a former student in our Judo Club.
Let’s congratulate Alessia for her great accomplishment.
